The joint graduate program between Tsinghua University and Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology) began in 2004. As the first dual master's joint program between China and Japan, it holds significant strategic importance. This project combines the strengths in talent development of Tsinghua University and Institute of Science Tokyo, and is committed to cultivating outstanding young talents with multilingual and multicultural backgrounds, global competence, and innovative capabilities in the fields of biology, nanotechnology, and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Psychology. The students trained through this project will be able to adapt to the work needs of China and Japan in cutting-edge technology and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Psychology, and become the bridge for industrial and social cooperation between the two countries.
Each student will be supervised by two co-supervisors, one from each institution. The two universities exchange an equal number of graduate students annually. Graduate students who meet the training requirements of both parties will receive master's degrees awarded by the two universities respectively. The mode of deep participation, joint training, and collaboration between the two supervisors not only enhances the joint training of international talents between the two universities but also drives comprehensive and deep cooperation between them. Over the 20 years of the project's operation, the two universities have jointly enrolled 268 students, assigned nearly 250 teaching staff, and facilitated academic visits for over 400 individuals, achieving remarkable results in talent development and establishing a model for joint training of dual-degree graduate students between China and Japan.
